Summer School

"what goes on here in the morning?" the man walking his dog asked me. he gestured toward all our cars sloppily parked near home base (yes, people in the suburbs are not the best parellel parkers).

"summer school!" i found myself answering all too energetically. was it obvious i had just gotten back from a four day weekend and was overly enthusiastic to begin the day?

touch-point math, toilettes reaching one foot high, compulsive handwashing, daily calender songs, cleaning desks with shaving cream- we do it all in first grade. every afternoon i get a handful of carefully preserved chocolate teddy grahms from jon. i find myself furiously creating dotted letters because my favorite little writer madly traces letters like a junior shakespeare and is always wanting more! more! more! letters.

i am overly supportive and excited when kevin draws the perfect lower case k and jesus has the sweetest whisper and smile. i am the subject of many drawings created in the classroom: often a pair of heels, a fancy purse, and longer hair is added to my image. i guess they would sign me up for fashion advice if they had the chance. i am a great swing-pusher (or so i am told) but i had to sit out of gym because i sprained my ankle two weeks ago. i defintely look forward to working with the geriatric population once i become an occupational therapist but i think it is fun to be in a school/ teaching setting for a summer or two.
