Rooftop & Ogden Avenue Waves

candace is here yay!
it is a sunny drive down warrenville road- i am picking up my squirellfriend & we have tentative plans to romp around evanston and the city. midmorning friday drive on 88 is satisfying with my squirell, sharing thoughts on first grade seating charts, calendars, & the letter w. she shows me her old home. a bi-level just like my highschool home. for some reason we loved these bi-levels while our parents detested the many mini flights of stairs. her house is painted brown now, she notes sadly. she takes a picture for her mom in texas to see.
"and i used to climb onto the roof," she says.
"to sneak in or just for fun?"
"just to sit on it, of course. just to read or hold my journal up there. i was sixteen. i needed my roof."
i understand perfectly. just like i needed my front porch that overlooked a very busy avenue. with my legs swung over the arm of a wicker chair, alice walker in my hands, and a summer breeze carrying the scent of my infamous chicken pot pie, i could listen to the traffic pass and hear the ocean in those rolling tires.
