Birthday with a cha-cha-cha

"do you want happy birthday sung with the cha cha chas?" mrs. L asked me right before the end of calender. i glanced at my small friend sitting next to me and asked her for an opinion.
"yes!" she answered and so the 22 first graders sang happy birthday to me- stumbling over my last name and getting a wink from mrs. L. i hid myself behind my friend's six year old body as best i could- helping her conduct the class chorus with a huge grin on her face. i have never been very good at being the center of attention in a big crowd. even on my return to first grade.

last year candace and ebeth thoughtfully planned a very nice suprise birthday party for me. the kitten was even invited and adorned in ribbon & ben gave me a two hour tour of the north shore while friends broke in and decorated my apartment. i get nervous in big crowds sometimes so candace and elizabeth made sure the party size was just right. upon my sitting down after the shock of unexpectedly seeing john sitting on my bed, candace instructed everyone to "sit as close to jenny as possible. surround her so she doesnt get nervous about everyone having a good time and not talking!"

there are friends that know you very well and that was a token moment. this year i am working with a fabulous team of teachers and i had another wonderful birthday- my coworkers brought in hoards of chocolate, cakes, milanos, and strawberries & grapes for a pleasant feasting. the nurse, ben, and my dad each brought me flowers and i decorated the student's eating areas with the flowers to "upscale" our fine dining hour. i met ben at the trainstation and he treated me to my favorite meal: the enchilada. mmm. thank you everyone so much for ringing in twenty three years with me! "feel the power of twenty three," i told jeff upon my assertion of future plans. im very excited for this year- i am working on the execution of my twentythree plans.
