Making decisions in bars

"youre in good company with char," melissa said, parking her car next to the air pump at the gas station. i had an image of melissa's mom waking up in the morning, stepping through the plastic curtains that section off her gutted kitchen from the rest of her home, and seeing the springy snowfall cover her porch.

"every morning she sighs a little louder about march." we entered the mobile of our youth and exchanged three lottery tickets for twelve dollars. "i'll buy you a drink with this money," she said as we passed the coke machine.

once settled in the little pub off jefferson, we shouted over the solo guitar player rocking out to his own version of one of my favorites sister goldenhair.

"i think you need to make a list of possible regrets you would have if you didnt go to each school," melissa suggested. she pulled out her little black journal and we brainstormed. my biggest regret if i go to minnesota: i will feel like i am not brave enough to move somewhere like boston and actually try to make it on my own near the ocean. my biggest regret for boston: being in debt $100,000+. i am still working out the logical versus the emotional. meanwhile i am filing for every financial aid and scholarship in reach.
